Picture yourself walking through a garden, stopping to smell all of the beautiful flowers in bloom. What you are savouring are the scents of the essential oils in those plants. When you push your thumb into an orange peel and the room fills with that sweet citrus smell, you’re breathing in a fine mist of essential oils. Freshly cut grass, a forest full of pine trees, the sweet and spicy aroma of cinnamon in your pantry? You guessed it.
Read on for more information about what essential oils are, how they work, and my top five essential oil picks for beginners.
Essential oils are volatile chemical compounds found in the seeds, leaves, petals, roots and bark of plants. They are called “essential oils” because they contain the essence of that plant – the characteristic scent or flavour the plant is known for. These oils also contain some of the wonderful healing properties boasted by these plants, and they are one of their best defenses against environmental threats.
Human beings are as much a part of nature as a tall tree or a perfect red rose, so it only makes sense that plants have the potential to be powerful healers for our bodies as well. We have the ability to receive and respond to essential oils the same way plants and animals do. Essential oils are composed from fat molecules, which is one reason they are so efficient and effective as a form of medicine. Our skin, blood and cells can readily absorb them and feel their benefits within minutes, whether they are inhaled, applied to our skin, or consumed*.
The rise in popularity of pure essential oils came with an increased demand for less toxic products in our lives, a more holistic approach to health, and a desire to be empowered with the tools to live a cleaner, greener life.
How I Use Essential Oils in my Daily Routine:
- I make my own simple all-purpose cleaner using vinegar, water, and whichever oils I choose.
- I diffuse essential oils instead of buying expensive candles that are often loaded with chemicals and fake fragrances.
- I wear essential oils as an all-natural perfume. I use them in my meditation and yoga practices, and I am so thankful for the support they give me as a highly sensitive and emotional being.
- We use them to prevent illness in our family and the spread of germs in our home. They give us peace of mind and confidence, knowing exactly what we are exposing ourselves to.
- I also used them actively throughout my pregnancy (more info on this in a future post, stay tuned)
My husband and I both feel that our health has improved since incorporating oils into our daily and wellness routines, and they are an integral part of our daughter’s routine as well. They help to support all three of us in our physical and emotional health and wellness.
Are you looking to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals in your home? Do you want more natural solutions for yourself and your family?
Here are the Top Five Oils you Need to Start your Collection:
This floral oil is known for its calming properties. It’s great for promoting a more restful sleep, quieting anxiety, and is very soothing on the skin (prevents itching and redness, great for minor abrasions or burns, can be helpful for conditions like eczema etc.) I use Lavender on a daily basis to encourage sleepy vibes in our baby girl’s nursery.
Known as “The King of Oils” for good reason. This earthy resin oil is great for soothing and improving the appearance of skin (ie. scars and lesions, wrinkles, bruises and discoloration) Frankincense is also incredible if you suffer from migraines or pressure headaches, because of how quickly it can penetrate the blood-brain barrier. I’m talking relief you can feel within minutes – if you suffer from debilitating pain, that timing is a powerful thing. The cellular benefits of Frank can help to support healthy circulatory and immune function as well. Seriously, the King. High quality Frankincense is pricey, but it’s worth every penny.
This classic oil is cooling, energizing and refreshing. Peppermint is extremely beneficial for colds and allergies because it helps to expand airways and allows for deeper, easier breaths. It’s also wonderful for treating chronic joint or acute muscle pain, and is well-known for its ability to soothe an upset stomach.
Long before I knew what essential oils were, I knew there was Tea Tree. My mom kept it on hand to treat skin issues when we were kids, such as warts or a dreaded lice outbreak at school. It’s also great for scalp and nail health, and can support healthy immune function when diffused or taken internally*.
This citrus powerhouse is energizing and uplifting, making it a great choice for a mood boost. Lemon oil is also very cleansing, both internally in our bodies and externally in our homes. Add a drop or two to your water for a refreshing detox, or use it as a clean/green ingredient in your DIY natural surface sprays.
The oils I’ve listed above have been approved by Health Canada as NHP (Natural Health Products) because they have been scientifically proven to improve and support so many conditions. Our ancestors used plants to heal themselves for thousands of years, and many man-made medicines used today are inspired by the relationship between humans and plants. Natural/alternative medicines and methods of healing are finding their place again in the world of mainstream science and medicine, because they WORK! I am so grateful to have these magical little bottles at my fingertips.
*If you are planning on taking essential oils internally, PLEASE make sure you are choosing a brand that produces truly pure, quality oils. My personal choice is and always will be doTERRA for a number of reasons, but especially because of the rigorous third-party lab testing every batch of oils goes through.
